Mayor Teresa Jacobs and the Veterans Advisory Council Commemorate 50th Anniversary of Vietnam War with Memorial Day Ceremony

Orange County, FL – Citizens are invited to join Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and the Veterans Advisory Council on Memorial Day in remembering and saluting the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our Armed Forces. The annual Orange County War Memorial Commemoration Ceremony will take place at the Orange County Courthouse at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25, 2015. The focus for this year’s ceremony will be on those who sacrificed their lives in Vietnam, as part of the national commemorative program marking the 50th anniversary of that war.

“We join our grateful nation in honoring the selfless sacrifice of the brave Americans whose courageous spirit and noble sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Mayor Jacobs said. “As we pay tribute to our fallen hometown heroes on Memorial Day, join me in also remembering all those who currently serve in our Armed Forces with valor, courage and honor.”

At 10 a.m., Mayor Jacobs will deliver remarks and will be accompanied by members of the Orange County Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council in a wreath laying ceremony, which will be followed by the playing of “Taps” to commemorate the fallen heroes. U.S. Navy Capt. (ret.) Warren Hudson, a Vietnam veteran and president of Lake Highland Preparatory School, will be the keynote speaker. He commanded a Swift Boat in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Combat “V” for valor during his 26-year-career as a U.S. Naval officer.

In addition, at 2 p.m. Mayor Jacobs will provide remarks at the 2015 Memorial Day Ceremony with the Central Florida Veterans Memorial Park Foundation at the VA Medical Center at Lake Nona. The Memorial is home to a special wall that commemorates the names of 1,100 veterans from Orange, Lake, Brevard, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties, and also features a memorial chapel.
