Orange County Government to Host Hurricane Preparedness Emergency Activity as Part of “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day”
WHAT: In honor of the national “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” on April 26, 2018, Orange County Government is sponsoring “Take Our Children to Work Day.” In addition to the activities planned by each department, Orange County Government with Mayor Teresa Jacobs and District 4 Commissioner Jennifer Thompson will host an interactive hurricane preparedness activity.
The purpose of the event is to provide students (ages 8-18) with a firsthand look at local government in action and how Orange County Government prepares its residents for emergency events, such as hurricanes. The kids will take on different emergency function roles – everything from Public Works to Law Enforcement to Fire to Public Information – and give press briefings. They will be given a scenario to work with from the Office of Emergency Management.
Following the activity, public safety officials will offer an interactive demonstration of public safety vehicles.

Background: Designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work program goes beyond the average practice of “shadowing” an adult. Exposing young citizens to what a parent or mentor does during the work day is important. Showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, providing them an opportunity to share how they envision the future, and allowing them to begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment is key to their achieving success.
