On Friday, June 9, citizens and community leaders gathered at the Linda Chapin Theatre inside the Orange County Convention Center to hear Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings’ 2023 State of the County address. In his speech, the Mayor focused on how Orange County Government is taking the County to the next level.

“This has been a year of significant achievements, record-breaking tourism numbers and strong economic growth,” he said. “It has been a year of triumphs, hardships and challenges that only Mother Nature could deliver. As a community, we’ve worked together to face the unknown, and we’re stronger because of it.”

During his remarks, Mayor Demings highlighted how Orange County has not only come back strong from the COVID-19 pandemic but is now thriving. He focused on Orange County’s robust economy, healthy financial reserves and outstanding bond ratings, which will “help navigate the turbulent times and weather the storms ahead.”

Speaking of weathering storms, the Mayor reminded everyone of how destructive Hurricane Ian was and how it struck our community with record flooding, leaving thousands without power or livable homes. He praised the Orange County Office of Emergency Management, Orange County Fire Rescue and other departments, specifically regarding how they prepared for and responded to the storm, providing residents with much-needed assistance and peace of mind.

“A significant part of the County’s response is community outreach,” he added. “We worked with community partners, including the Salvation Army, Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and others to distribute meals, water, LYNX bus passes, grocery cards and social services.”

The Mayor’s address also highlighted how the County is aggressively addressing the affordable housing crisis and growth-related transportation and environmental challenges, the booming tourism and hospitality industry, education and economic growth, innovation and technology, the integral role of local small businesses, public safety, behavioral health, sustainability, and our thriving sports, arts and cultural venues.

“We’re taking Orange County to the next level by providing transformation experiences to visitors,” he concluded, “and by focusing on economic development, delivering quality education in demand careers, strengthening our partnerships, investing in affordable housing, preserving and sustaining our environment, protecting our community, providing access to children and family programs, and investing in the arts and entertainment.”
