Orange County Marks One Year of Accelerated Transportation Safety Program with 76 Projects Completed

Community & Services

One year after Orange County launched its Accelerated Transportation Safety Program, County officials are reporting strong progress in improving roadway safety, access and mobility for residents across all six districts.

The program was established in 2023 as a fast-tracked initiative to identify and deliver critical transportation safety improvements in high-priority areas. With an emphasis on pedestrian safety, traffic calming, lighting and transit infrastructure, the program was designed to address long-standing community concerns at a rapid pace.

Since its inception, 76 projects have been completed under the program, including the installation of 44 new sidewalks, 25 roadway lighting enhancements and seven safety-specific improvements. These projects are part of the County’s broader commitment to reducing crashes, improving walkability and increasing equitable access to public transportation.

“Orange County is building better access, mobility and efficiency through this important program,” said Mayor Jerry L. Demings. “And, with a year under our belt, I’m excited to say that much has been accomplished, and much more will be as program efforts continue.”

Among the most significant accomplishments completed this year:

  • Rio Grande Avenue Pedestrian Safety Improvements – Enhanced crosswalks, signage and pedestrian refuge areas now provide a safer route for students and residents walking along this busy corridor.
  • Town Center Boulevard – New speed feedback signs and temporary bi-directional median openings were installed to improve driver awareness and traffic flow in a growing commercial and residential zone. After a one-year assessment period, County engineers will make recommendations on making these improvements permanent.
  • Kirby Smith Road and Tyson Road – This area saw a range of improvements including speed tables, raised crosswalks, a new 4-way stop, fresh pavement striping and new lighting along Tyson Road. A sidewalk installation along the south side of Tyson just started construction this month.

Looking ahead, the County is working on Clarcona-Ocoee Road — an area with documented speeding issues and past fatalities – with speed feedback signs and other safety improvements. The County is preparing to break ground on the traffic signal project, which will install both a pedestrian crosswalk signal and a full traffic signal. Completion is expected by mid 2027.

In parallel, Orange County is investing $55 million over five years to improve the LYNX regional transportation system. These funds have already enabled more frequent bus service and shorter wait times, resulting in a 35 percent jump in ridership on those improved routes. One route serving the Washington Shores neighborhood saw an 81 percent increase in Sunday riders. As part of the program, 264 new bus shelters will also be installed countywide.

With dozens of additional projects underway or planned, the  ATSP initiative continues to deliver meaningful improvements that residents can see — and feel — on the road.
