Mayor’s Letter

Greetings,

It is hard to believe August is already here. With extreme heat and high humidity becoming more common, the risk of heat-related illnesses is rising. This summer, be proactive: stay hydrated and avoid being outdoors during the hottest parts of the day. Orange County is working with the library system, community centers and local homeless shelters to help residents stay cool. You will find more heat safety tips in this month’s newsletter.

Along with the summer heat, families are also preparing for the new school year. I encourage you to take advantage of Florida’s 2025 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, now through August 31. It is a great opportunity to save on school supplies, clothing and electronics.

Although we’ve had a relatively quiet start to hurricane season, this is historically the time when the tropics become more active. I encourage you to ensure your emergency supply kit is fully stocked and your family is prepared for severe weather. You can find more helpful hurricane season tips inside this newsletter.

Finally, let us ensure a safe start to the school year for our students, teachers and school staff. Please be extra cautious when driving in school zones and follow the guidance of our dedicated crossing guards.

Sincerely,

Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings
