Update: Boat Ramps Update | November 16, 2022 | 4 p.m.

The following Orange County boat ramps are now open, effective immediately:

  • Trimble Park – Lake Dora
  • Magnolia Park – Lake Apopka
  • Barnett Park – Lake Lawne

Boat ramps at Moss Park, Bywater and Woodsmere will reopen at 8 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, November 17, 2022. Orange County’s remaining boat ramps remain closed due to high lake water levels.

Update: Emergency Shelters | November 11, 2022 | 9 a.m.

As of 9 a.m. this morning, the shelter at South Econ Community Park has closed. All emergency shelters for Tropical Storm Nicole have are now closed. For general storm recovery information, please visit ocfl.net/storm.

Weather and Safety Updates

Orange County remains in a Tropical Storm Warning. However, the warning is expected to expire later this afternoon. Residents may still experience light rain and wind gusts this evening.

Orange County Government urges residents to adhere to the following safety messages:

  • Downed Power Lines: Residents can report downed power lines by dialing 9-1-1. Residents are urged to never approach, touch or drive over downed power lines. Always assume lines are electrified.
  • Inoperable Traffic Lights: Residents can report inoperable traffic lights by dialing 3-1-1 or 407-836-3111. Residents can learn more about what to do when they drive up to inoperable or malfunctioning traffic lights by visiting the county’s online newsroom.

Emergency Shelters

The general population shelter located at the West Orange Recreation Center has closed. Currently, the only general population shelter that is open in Orange County is located at South Econ Community Park.

Solid Waste Collection and Facilities

The Orange County Landfill and Transfer Stations will reopen on Friday, Nov.11, at 8 a.m.

Due to the storm, there were no residential collections on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022. Customers whose regular collection day is Thursday will be picked up on Friday, Nov. 11, and Friday customers will be picked up on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Households in unincorporated Orange County that did not have curbside collection on Wednesday will be serviced next Wednesday, Nov. 16. Those customers can put out extra garbage on their yard waste and large item collection day for pick up.

Residents may continue to experience some delays with yard waste collection for the next few weeks. Additionally, it is important to remember that yard waste at the curb for regular service is limited to three cubic yards each week and must still be set out according to the guidelines, including limbs cut to three feet in length, tied, and each bundle under 60 pounds. Storm debris outside of these guidelines will be collected separately.

Public Works Pump Stations

Orange County Public Works reports that all of its pump stations are operational and no major flooding has been reported.

Lakes and Green Places

The following updates were issued by Orange County’s Parks and Recreation Division and Environmental Protection Division.

  • Boat Ramps: Orange County is issuing a precautionary lake advisory due to the storm. Due to rain, high lake levels may hide submerged debris that can cause damage or injury. All public boat ramps under the control of the county are closed. Residents are asked to refrain from any recreational activity and contact with water bodies until further notice. Boat ramps will remain closed until Orange County Parks and Recreation Division conducts an evaluation of each site. For more information, please contact Parks@ocfl.net.
  • Green Place Closures: County-operated Green PLACE properties are currently closed. Properties will remain closed until Orange County Environmental Protection Division conducts an evaluation of each site. For more information, please contact GreenPLACE@ocfl.net.

Update: Environmental Protection Division Update | November 10, 2022 | 8 a.m.

LAKE ADVISORY

Orange County is issuing a precautionary lake advisory due to Hurricane Nicole.  Keep boats at idle speed and be cautious of submerged and floating structures. The purpose of this advisory is to protect public health and property. Contact Lakes@ocfl.net for more information.

BOAT RAMPS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

All public boat ramps under the control of Orange County are currently closed. Please refrain from any recreational activity in the waters and refrain from any contact with water bodies until further notice. Once the storm passes, the ramps will remain closed until Orange County Parks and Recreation Division conducts an evaluation for each ramp. Contact Parks@ocfl.net for more information.

GREEN PLACE CLOSURES

All County-operated Green PLACE properties are currently closed. Once the storm passes, the Orange County Environmental Protection Division will evaluate each property for reopening. Contact  GreenPLACE@ocfl.net for more information.

Weather Update

As of 3 p.m. today, Orange County Government is still in a Tropical Storm Warning. Tropical Storm Nicole is estimated to produce damaging winds and approximately 4-6 inches of rain. Additional effects include:

  • Sustained 35-mph winds at approximately 6 p.m.
  • Chances of hurricane-force gusts
  • Flood watch issued for Orange County
  • Possibility for tornadoes overnight

Orange County Utilities

Debris Pick Up and Road Assessment

Orange County Public Works plans to resume debris removal and emergency roadway clearance activities on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022.

Public Works Road and Drainage workers are stationing crews in roads where flooding has been a problem in the past – Texas and Holden, Lake Eleanor, and Rouse and Buck Roads. This is being done as a precaution. Public Works teams will begin assessing roadways as soon as winds subside.

Theme Parks

Our Central Florida theme parks are adjusting operating hours due to the storm.

  • Walt Disney World Resort: Closing parks early, with the Magic Kingdom being the last park to close at 7 p.m. the evening
  • Universal Studio: Closing parks at 5 p.m. this evening
  • Sea World Orlando and Aquatica Orlando: Closed tomorrow

Guests are encouraged to follow up with specific theme parks on unique operating hours.

Update: Sandbags | November 9, 2022 | 9 a.m.

Sandbags are still available to residents preparing for the potential impacts from Tropical Storm Nicole. The county’s self-serve sandbag distribution will be open today, Wednesday, November 9, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

  • Downey Park
  • Fort Christmas Historical Park
  • Clarcona Horse Park
  • Orange County Multicultural Center

Sites may close early due to weather or if supplies run out before noon.

State of Emergency

Orange County remains under a Local State of Emergency and is one of 34 counties in a Florida State of Emergency for Subtropical Storm Nicole.

The National Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Orange County at 11 a.m. today. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the coastal Central Florida counties including Volusia and Brevard.

Sandbags

Orange County residents are urged to prepare now for this storm. The county will have four self-serve sandbag locations open on Tuesday, November 8, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. These locations are:

  • Downey Park – 10107 Flowers Avenue, Orlando
  • Fort Christmas Historical Park – 1300 Fort Christmas Road, Christmas
  • Clarcona Horse Park/Clarcona Outpost – 3535 Damon Road, Apopka
  • Multicultural Center – 7149 W. Colonial Drive, Orlando

Residents will need to bring their own shovels and will be provided up to 10 bags to fill. Residents must also provide a valid photo ID with an Orange County address.

Debris

Orange County Utilities and Public Works have been working around the clock since Hurricane Ian to remove yard waste and storm debris from resident’s yards. To date, more than 150,000 cubic yards of debris has been picked up in the county.

There is more debris still needing to be collected. Residents are asked if they still have debris in their yards to try and keep it from washing down the storm drains. Please get debris off the streets and onto the front yards, away from the street.

Schools

Orange County Public Schools are closely monitoring the storm with the National Weather Service and the Orange County Office of Emergency Management. At this time, no decision has been made to cancel school or extracurricular activities.

Election Day

Tomorrow is Election Day. Elections Supervisor Bill Cowles is preparing all the voting sites. The impending storm will not impact your decision to exercise your right to vote.

Update: Sandbags | November 7, 2022 | 3 p.m.

Orange County Public Works is making sandbags immediately available to residents preparing for potential impacts from Subtropical Storm Nicole.

Downey Park, located at 10107 Flowers Avenue, will open to residents at 3:00 p.m. today with three other locations opening Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.

Working in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Division, Public Works will have four sites where bags and sand will be available on a self-serve basis by Tuesday.  Residents will need to bring their own shovel or spade to fill their bags. The other three locations will be identified later today.

Residents will need to provide proof of residency within Orange County to be provided 10 unfilled sandbags and directed to the sand pile.

Update: Tropical Storm Watch | November 7, 2022 | 2 p.m.

Orange County Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the shifting track of Subtropical Storm Nicole and its impact to Orange County. As of 11 a.m. this morning, a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Orange County. For more information visit the National Weather Services.
