Orange County Celebrates Building Safety Month
Orange County Government’s Division of Building Safety in conjunction with the International Code Council (ICC) celebrated Building Safety Month (BSM) in May. This year’s theme was Building Codes: Driving Growth through Innovation, Resilience and Safety.
The month promoted weekly themes that highlighted a specific area of building safety and fire prevention. For 36 years, the ICC has sponsored Building Safety Month to encourage community awareness and understanding of building safety, sustainability, resilience and the critical role of code officials.
BSM aligns with the mission of Orange County’s Division of Building Safety, “To ensure public health, safety and welfare through the enforcement of federal, state and local codes governing construction.”
This year, Orange County’s Division of Building Safety planned a variety of activities to celebrate BSM, including decorative displays in the lobby and office area, informational booths at local home improvement stores and, for the second year, Orange County’s Building Safety Customer Appreciation and Education Day.
The event was held on May 17 in the atrium area of the Orange County Government’s Administration Center. The Building Safety Division along with representatives from the Environmental Protection Division, the offices of the Fire Marshal, Impact Fees, Consumer Fraud, Property Appraiser, the Division of Business and Professional Regulations and Go Solar offered customers educational brochures, useful giveaways, tasty treats and a chance to win two gift baskets.
More than 100 customers attended the event, which was comprised of homeowners, licensed contractors, permit expeditors, business owners and citizens of Orange County.
“Anytime we can share information, show appreciation and get positive feedback from our customers, it helps us know our service and commitment to safety with code compliance is working,” said Orange County’s Division of Building Safety Manager Alan Plante.
Lolaine Conner, a permit expeditor for Dixie Pools, has been a customer with Building Safety for 39 years.
“I have had the opportunity to work with municipalities all over the state of Florida and I can honestly say, Orange County’s Building Safety Division is one of the best,” Conner said. “I really enjoyed the customer appreciation day. The information that was provided by the Orange County staff will help me and others during the permitting process.”
