Community Action Division Helps Families Earn Financial Independence

Enhancing the quality of life, promoting self-sufficiency, and eliminating the causes and consequences of poverty, is the mission of Orange County’s Community Action Division. It prides itself on providing the services needed to help families achieve economic independence with the Family Self-Sufficiency Program.

“By providing funding opportunities to those seeking trade programs, citizens are able to gain skills that help them obtain a livable wage,” explained Marcia Owens, Family Self-Sufficiency program manager.  “Through case management services, they also gain access to support services and resources like employability skills, career coaching, first-time homebuyers, credit repair, and more.”

Owens ensures Community Services employees are providing direct client services while securing partnerships with local community programs. “The goal is to not only provide core services but also wraparound services to help our clients make the overall household stable,” she said.

Tuition assistance is available for vocational skills training, post-secondary education and state certification, enabling residents to obtain and retain employment. Additional services provided include employment services and career coaching.

Participants must be an Orange County resident, 18 years old or older, and income eligible (Federal Poverty Guidelines) to qualify.

“An important aspect of the program is that it’s driven by the hopes and dreams of the resident participants,” said Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings. “When residents are empowered to make choices and set goals for themselves, the outcome is more meaningful, sustainable and valuable for the entire community.”

To apply, citizens can complete a Career interest Survey or visit one of the eight Community Centers across Orange County. Computers are also available at these locations to assist residents with their educational goals, view job postings, increase their online skills and access other computer-related resources.
