Orange County Inmate Saves Man from Electrocution
Orange County, FL – An inmate from the Orange County Work Release Center, who is also employed with a local automotive dealer, is credited with saving the life of his colleague last Thursday.
On August 20, the Orlando Police Department and fire rescue units were called to respond to an industrial accident on West Colonial Drive after an employee completing an electrical job touched a hot wire and experienced a severe electrical shock. Jose Malpica, who is also an inmate at the Orange County Work Release Center, immediately took action by grabbing a piece of wood to push his colleague, successfully releasing him from the electrical current and into safety. After breaking the current, he assisted his colleague to the ground and began monitoring his breathing until the Orlando Fire Department arrived and transported him.
Inmates housed at the Work Release Center must meet strict criteria and be sentenced to less than one year of an incarceration. Malpica is being housed on charges related to contempt of court and is due to be released on October 1. The Work Release Center is a non-secure facility that allows inmates to maintain employment throughout their sentence so that they may repay restitution, child support and other court fees associated with their case. In combination with access to life skills and counseling, the program sets participants up for a better transition back into the community upon their release.
