There’s Nothing Super about Super Speeding

Orange County, FL – Florida’s Super Speeder Law, which targets dangerous excessive speeding, went into effect on July 1, 2025. The new law makes extreme speeding an arrestable offense. Drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by more than 50 mph or who travel faster than 100 mph now face harsher penalties. In its first three months, the Orange County Jail reports 70 bookings for excessive speeding.

Some of the arrestees have included:

  • A female driving 113 mph because she was in a hurry to pick up her dog
  • A male driving 111 mph while under the influence of alcohol
  • A motorcyclist doing 101 mph because he was late for work
  • A 29-year-old man driving 104 mph with a 10-month-old baby in the vehicle

Many of the arrest reports indicated the drivers navigated multiple unsignaled lane changes and tailgating putting themselves, their passengers and other motorists at risk.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), speeding contributes to approximately 29% of all traffic fatalities in the United States.

Orange County Chief of Corrections Louis A. Quinones Jr. cautions drivers to think twice before accelerating. “Excessive speeding is a formula for failure because it drastically increases the potential for tragic consequences,” he said.

Orange County Corrections thanks local law enforcement agencies and the Florida Highway Patrol for proactively pursuing super speeders.
