Orange County’s Pollution Prevention Champion Spotlight: Hilton Orlando
Hilton Orlando, in partnership with the Surfrider Foundation, is home to two eating establishments that have recently been certified as Ocean Friendly Restaurants. The certification demonstrates a commitment by a restaurant to the environment and waterways, to reduce the plastic footprint.
- No Styrofoam use
- No plastic bags for takeout orders
- No straws provided, unless requested by a guest
- Guests provided with reusable tableware
- Local recycling practices followed
“Aligning ourselves with the requirements was really quite easy,” said Hilton Orlando’s Director of Food & Beverage Justin Garner. “Pollution prevention has always been a strong focus of ours.”
In addition, the Surfrider Foundation requires that its restaurants meet at least two additional ocean friendly criteria from a list of five choices. Both David’s and Spencer’s met all five elective criteria:
- All seafood is “Best Choice” or “Good Alternative” as defined by Seafood Watch, or is certified as sustainable
- Vegetarian/vegan food options offered on a regular basis
- Energy-efficiency measures in place, such as installing LED lighting and Energy Star appliances
- No beverages sold in plastic bottles
- Water conservation efforts incorporated, such as installing low-flow faucets and toilets
As part of its 2030 goals, Hilton has committed to cutting its environmental footprint in half in the next decade. This certification program will help achieve that goal and inspire staff and visitors to redefine sustainable travel.
With more than 600 lakes in Orange County, the restricted use of Styrofoam, plastic bags and straws will benefit local water bodies and make Orange County a safer place for residents, visitors and wildlife.
